Tyrell is a 34 yr old man who had lived at home his whole life. He is on disability due to asthma and does some part-time work with DoorDash.
In January, he was able to secure his own apartment for the first time in a relatively new building that gave him affordable rent due to his limited income. Unfortunately, Tyrell did not get any life skills training growing up on how to pay bills and manage expenses. He mistakenly mailed a money order for his rent payment and forgot to affix a stamp.
Tyrell was like an innocent kid trying to make it without his family's help. Although he is 34 years old, he never had to manage a household alone and really needed someone to assist him to learn how.
We were able to do both. We give him a bag full of household essentials, assist him with financial assistance to secure his home, referred him to several areas for food assistance, and connected him with the new Novant/Michael Jordan clinics for health-related issues.
Also, he became a candidate of our Financial Management Program (FMP). He welcomed our prayers and was open to seeking out a local Christian church to worship God and also build up a circle of support in his new location.
We gave him the sense that there are people who care about him and he can go to for help--he's not alone. God and the Vincentians are on his side.
